This has got to be the dumbest question posted today, but here goes. The first tme I filled the tank on our newly acquired 1999 SL500, I quit pumping when the auto shutoff clicked on the gas pump. The tank was 3/4 full per the gas gauge. Yesterday I filled it for the second time. After the auto shutoff of the pump clicked off, I started pumping about half speed. I got another 4 gallons in. I also got about half a gallon of gas burping back out the filler tube onto the side of the car and the ground. The gauge now reads full but there has got to be a better method of getting a full tank without the backflow.

Any trick to this?

Try using the slowest setting. Gas station varies too since some have old pumps. I have this problem with some of the [exact] gas stations.

Don't top off too much though because you might damage the canister.
