SL/R129: First SL
I'm going Saturday to look at a 1997 SL500 with 121k miles. Although I have a 1992 400e and a 1993 300e, I have absolutely no experience with the R129. Any advice you could give me on what to look for and what to avoid would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Charles Taylor
Look at the top condition overall as replacing won't be cheap.
Confirm that all the idiot lights come on when the key is first turned and then that none stay lit while running.
You probably know that "AC needs some gas" will probably cost several thousand.
Ask for any service records and examine them closely for trends, confirmation of regular service, and any large repairs that might have been done...
Oh hell.... Just read this.

Trans shift ? smooth, hold in high RPM, shift points have been a problem
All the plastic will be aged, not a factor for me, but it is expensive per pound! I hate the expense but I want it done!
Have fun. cool cars are worth the time and money!
