I read an artical once that said ABS and ESP systems rely on a specific diameter (that's pretty basic).

Do the vendors that sell these good looking rims do all the research involved to play with larger rims and low profile tires?

They look good, but on a 1999 SL 500 ... would the roll / cornering charcterisics be imroved in a significant way?

Full sized cars and trucks 30 years ago always had 16" rims. Now my 1999 SL 500 came standard with 17" (I think?).

The cool pictures posted push to 20" rims ... wondering if there will be fender well rub.

Is this tendancy for large diameter, low profile tires controlled?

Does it originate mostly from pure cosmetics?

Those black SLs with two piece rims do look great!

Can anyone explain this trend to me?

It will be a while before I have enough money to throw away perfectly good factory rims. But I am curious.
