Question Brakes?

How much should I expect to pay for a complete brake job and what do I need? I was selling the car and 2 people have said the car needs pads and rotors and that is a huge job? Is this true - heading to dealer tomorrow - thnaks in advance Car is a 95 with 65,000 miles on it

I had new pads all round and 2 new front rotors (discs) last year. Cost was about $450 for the SL600 but I do not think its brakes are vastly different from the SL500. It's a quick job, they did it while I waited.

thanks

I was quoted around $700 with 4 new rotors - is there something additional called brake sensors which are expensive ?

I think that sounds about right. The brake sensors are contacts which detect when the pads are worn and switch on the warning light. I think you have to replace them but they're not especially expensive. Nothing like the tyre pressure sensors for example.

There's not much labor in doing this work - providing the rotors come off cleanly and this work is probably the most expensive routine maintenance which an SL ever needs. It's not surprising they wear of course - heavy performance car.

Brake Senors are about $14.00 each and you'd need 4 of them, and yes they have to replace them, unless they are not messed up much... I paid about 500.00 for having the fronts done brakes and rotors, then again I live in Silicon Valley and everything here is like 5 times more than anywhere else It sucks...

I'm sure your compensation packages are sufficiently robust to be able to handle it. You could always go and live in Nebraska...

Actually some cars require 2 sensors per caliper to measure the thickness of both pads in the SL.

Front discs 150
front pads 100
Rear discs 100
rear pads 60
sensors 60-80

thats almost 500 in parts. I would say that a good mechanic could do it in 1.5 hours.

Also have them power blead and put in new MB brake fluid.

So 600 - 700 complete brake job would be good, or you could do it yourself....

Are you a DIY'r? If so, I just replaced my pads, front and back for $63.00 plus shipping. I used PBR deluxe pads-- wonderful stopping,no squeal and NO DUST!!! If you were able to change to pads in time without hurting the rotors, then you don't need to change the rotors. It's a 1 hr job and it's CHEAP!!! Only reqiures basic metric tools and a C-clamp to push pistons back.

compared to $700, it's it's a no brainer!!
