yes. In the owners manual and with the top tool in the tool pack, you will find how to unlock! From your last reply I understand you do not have the original owners manual, the good news, there are videos on websites about benz that can U tube you methods.
Two plastic plugs are on the headliner at the windshield can be wedged out to expose a 6mm hex recepticle, ( if you had the benz wrench, one end has an allen hex end, the other has an open spanner that is used in the trunck to spring the back locks ) When you operate the front locks, the hex wrench is moved about an 1/12th of a turn. The back lock is not a bolt head you turn, but a lever, marked with red, and the thin open end of the spanner slides into a groove and then you rotate the red flange about 1/12th of a circle. With each release the lock makes a sound and the top section near the lock will "jump". The roll bar in the down position is easier on the retraction and won't scratch the plastic back window of the soft top.
This site and other benz world sites has a friend who has helped most of us with top hydraulic problems. Look forward to Klaus and his expert help.
Good luck with finding the right help.

Icancu2,
here is a link for downloading the owner's manual to your '98: http://bayhas.com/r129manu/1998%20R1...ers-manual.pdf
Why do you need to manually unlock the top? The forum can probably help you in troubleshooting and fixing the top hydraulic system without spending a fortune... :-)
