Availability of shop manuals(?) and STYLE!

Hello All,

I've had my SL for many years now (it's a '94), and see no reason to part with it, as it still runs strong, looks timelessly great, property taxes on it are low, and the replacement model (R230) looks more like a freakin' Toyota... er Lexus "cartoon-type" car than a "proper" ragtop roadster ever would!

Sooo... while still relegating many of the mundane or overly complex tasks to the local MB dealership, I'd like to get a repair manual (CD or hardcopy) to help nurse my baby along. Small tasks such as replacing an antenna mast or trunk-mount brake lamp LEDs, would be immeasurably easier without having to noodle it out sans-manual every time.

Unfortunately, it seems MB no longer produces hardcopy shop manuals (since 1990?), and a simple CD manual is not to be had (I heard rumors of a $1000 multi-CD set that implemented full PC diagnostics etc, but that's way overkill for what I want!)

I recently got shnookered for a W129 CD-rom manual on ebay... the seller disappeared and PayPal eventually agreed to refund the modest amount I "won" it for.

Does anyone here Know of a source for a W129 shop manual? (even the Benzbin.com does not carry them).

Thanks,

Paul

Those manuals are extremely hard to find, but I just bought them on CD from a company called ROI media services. It was around $100, which included and electronic parts catalog CD. However the installation was extremely awkward, and I still do not have it working correctly due to an incorrect license code. I can get you more info if you need it.

Sure thing!

I'd love to get more info about them... availability, content, specificity to the R129 model, etc. Also, can they run under Windows XP?. I saw a set listed on ebay as Windows NT *only*

Thanks for the help,

Paul

Here's the guy I got mine from. The documentation say it will run on Windows XP as well. Send Barry email for more details. Tell him that I (Mike Green) sent you:

Forgive my ignorance, but what's this about property taxes - on a car? You're not telling me are you that you have to pay tax just to own the thng after paying sales tax on it in the first place????

Here, we pay sales tax on the car when you buy it and about $260 a year to put it on the road. That said, the sales tax is 17.5% to start with and gas is $6 a gallon, so they get us too, just in a different way.

Yep... property tax on real estate AND such personal property as cars, boats, planes, campers, trailers, etc. etc is computed upon the book value of said property.

The mill rate here (my small town in Connecticut) is currently 19.110, but in the larger cities (where they are loathe to properly compute real estate values and thus shift more of the burden to car owners) occasionally hit the 50.0 mill range and higher... that's $50 tax on each $1K of assessed value... $500 on $10K and a whopping $5000 on $100,000! EACH YEAR!!!

The largest expense most towns and municipalities incur are for educational purposes, where the cost escalates yearly and the money has to come from somewhere (sigh!).

Paul

PS: Thanks for the lead Santron (earlier message)...I sent an email to the source you listed!

My goodness, I had no idea...

BTW, I agree with you about doing small jobs on the 129... I replaced the hood release cable a few weeks ago quite enjoyable to do even though there was some cursing along the way. It's an ideal way to put your back out as well, grubbing around in the foot-well.

I don't think that's the site that Bob was referring to. If you go to http://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/o...stedDocId=8002 you will find that Mercedes-Benz U.S. STAR Classic Service Manual DVD p/n P-2700-129-04 has not changed to p/n P-2700-129-07 yet. They haven't updated the site.

Please call the 800 number that he provided for the $88.00 DVD.

Yes, there are some pain in the butt WIS CD's for sale as well as inexpensive CD's with video clips that, were copied from a German site before it went down, taken in the early days of the R129. But, as yet I have not seen an $88.00 'MB STAR Service Manual Library, Model R129 DVD' for sale on eBay and it's the $88.00 MBUSA, P/N P-2700-129-07 that you want if you want to understand your car or plan a DIY.

Please read R129 STAR Classic Service Manual Library on DVD, STAR TekInfo, ALLDATAdiy, EPC
