SL/R129: Crank Position Sensor
How common is the CPS problem. It is listed high on a website I found.
It convinced me to be proactive and just change it out now.
$50 for a part that "generally" has a life span of 10 years is a no-brainer.
The only other thing I need is a 1/4 etorx socket set, $20..
So for $70 and about 30 minutes DIY time, that problem is avoided.
I already ordered one from AutohausAZ, it will be here in two days, and will save an expensive tow. I bet it's never been changed on my 99, even if it has, I'm making sure..$70 is cheap insurance.
The problems you are asking about don't fit that other information. CPS failures they described are GO-NOGO, nothing in the middle, the engine either runs correctly or it doesn't run at all.
The problem will exhibit itself when you are in traffic and the engines gets hot. All of a sudden it will just die with no CEL. So you have to wait awhile until the engine cools down and she will start until it gets hot again. The easiest way to diagnosis this problem is to have a gallon of water available to pour over the top back end of the drivers side of the engine at the bell housing where the CPS is located. The water will cool the sensor and the engine will start. VIOLA!
If you own a 99-02 SL buy your $45.00 CPS at AutohausAZ and carry it in the trunk for protection. Or until your ready to tackle this hard to get at location. Be prepared to drop the bolt that holds the CPS unless you read one of the DIY and take a suggestion from one of the guys as to how NOT to loose the bolt.
