77,300 miles SL 600 built in Sept 1993, titled 1994 and delivered to Nashville, TN in December 1993. No history of repair by PO. came to my inventory in October 1999 with 37,000 miles. No adverse transmission problem. non electronic automatic 3 speed
A spring system was replaced with the upgraded MB in 2000.
The nylon bushing in the linkage area from the shifting lever is sloppy but workable.
The warm up "hold in 2nd gear" preforms as noted in the manual.
Other benz owned have not had transmission problems. I have had clutch issues with several however. ( 190SL, 190D 220S, 220SE, 300C, 280SE all manual )May have been driving habit, more than materials defect. The last 3 were owned and driven in Germany and workmanship was my main concern.
Good luck on your information collection.

Thanks SRH for your reply which I appreciate very much. You are a lucky man that you have not yet had that transmission problem. It's accepted now that one in every 3 of the automatic transmissions with the 722.6 have and had this problem since 1996. Coint yourself lucky!
It is not therefore a problem caused by the driver but in fact a problem known to MB and they have TSBs covering the topic (ie technical support bulletins) have copies myself if you would like to read them. Give me your email address and I'll send you them.
Be careful.

I have a diagnostic code error read out from my diagnostic machine - "No Kick Down output signal". No other error code stored. The problem I noticed is that the car will be stalled and will drive only below 80 km/h when this occurred - I believe this is a designed limp mode speed. It will reset when engine is switched off and restart. The car will drive normally for sometime until the engine stalled and slows down again. Wonder if this is associated with a hydraulic leak currently encountered on front left side of the dry cell.
Any help on the solutions would be very much appreciated. :-)

Hi BK62
Please send me your email address and I will send you some interesting documents which will give you the background on your problem. MB have had these problems since 1996 and have been hiding it from clients. I have Reports which I can copy to you and it will show you that it is a wel known problem for MB

Hi Neville
Sorry to hear of your problems. I can't be sure whether your problem is like mine but you must be careful with MB transmissions as they are problematic. The problem I gave had with mine where there is a loss of power and where the car goes into false neutral can happen anytime . Your problem could be leading to that. What you need is an independent MB specialist ( not linked to MB) and he will give you good objective advice. I had the good fortune to come across such a man in Jersey Island (Channel Islands) and he is most accomplished man in his field. His name is Andrew Ruellan of Ruellans Garage and he was extremely helpful to me in identifying this problem. Don't expect to get such advice from MB as they are only concerned with concealing the problem. Be careful. If you develop the problem I have had or the other people I know then you could be in serious danger. Regards, Philip

My 91sl made a bluish puff of smoke on start. What now? Motörhead buddy says oil is sitting "some place" and is burning off. But I'm not using oil. Transmission starts bucking on occasion. No oil under car in garage and no oil being used. Then the tranny starts have major operating fits. So I go to my mechanic and he says open the hood to ck tyranny fluid. No tranny oil... He says the tranny fluid leaked in to the engine and this was the problem. I never cked the tranny level. Seal fixed and so far things are good.
We are on Long Island, New York with the very cold winter.the transmission shifts smooth even when just going.and of course when warmed up is smooth. What' the deal with this? It always clunks shifting ... Even in the summer until really warmed up. My r107 did this all the time.
A few yrs ago a car pulls up along side at a light and asks, " How the tranny?"
Clunks shifting, I say.
"Yeah, mine too".

Have had my 1997 SL600 with no noticeable transmission problems per say. I am the second owner from 1999 from around 8000km+ and it is around 95,000km. This was a dealer car to Japan.

Hi Philip
I have a 280se w126 1982. She have 2 trany problems that I Think may be resolved with some adjustment but I need direct guide.
It have a jerk at the beginning of reverse gear. In forward drive, gears smoothly change but in 4 even slight touch of the accelerator pedal shifts to 3.
Any advices are highly appreciated

I just purchased a 2000 SL500 with 111K Miles this past week. I had the car in for fluid flush of the transmission, the service rep found a sensor plug leaking other wise no other issues.

Philip,
Hello! I purchased a '90 500sl for my wife (130k on the car) and we're the third owners. Just recently I thought I might be losing first gear. If you try to start with it shifted manually into first, it'll actually start in second, but when you're in drive, tranny works beautiful! The more I experiment, the more I think it could also be a linkage issue. Haven't seen this issue on any threads. Ideas? .............Chuck
