failure: Soft top lowering question

so the new to be 1992 500SL soft top wont go down i can hear the motor working when i lock it and the hydrolic system leaking in the rear. (sounds like squirting) wont unlock and retract. the roll bar was up but the switch was missing so i borrowed it from my other 1992 500SL and the roll bar went down. windows also went down... (car is in rough shape so it was surprising as silly as that sounds). there are several other related issues tentatively. however on the top controller button it flashes when you try to lower the top. i know that means something but not sure what. also potential issue neutral safety switch or ignition switch or something... i once has a somewhat similar issue (it was related to the ignition switch i believe)....

any insight?

Euro Legends,

welcome to the forum. Needless to say, you need to locate and fix the hydraulic leaks. There is an incorrect/alarming signal from one of the micro switches if your red soft top button is blinking. Not knowing the (obviously rough) history of your car, it would be best to familiarize yourself with code reading, erase all soft top codes (through the connector in the engine compartment, not OBDII), and report which codes are left.

yeah the car is pretty rough.

my white r129 has a leak too however the tops (both) still work fine. only one cylinder is leaking although i know your supposed to redo all at once. what does that run? there are 12 right?

ill be taking it to the dealer for the black one and they can handle it then. i plan to buy a hard top and stick it on so it wont matter so much if it doesnt work. i just wanted to get it to lower.

thanks for your help

On a '92, you really need to have all those cylinders upgraded which still have original seals. Please do not fall for people trying to sell you o-rings as a fix, or trying to sell you red cup seals to replace just the rod seal. The o-ring fix is an almost guaranteed disaster, and we have had loads of cylinders coming in lately with low-quality red cup seals that someone is selling online. The hydraulic cylinders each have four different kinds of seals, which all get upgraded by Top Hydraulics. There is no substitute for quality seals and know-how when rebuilding these cylinders.

Indeed, your '92 has twelve hydraulic cylinders for top actuation and latching. See the diagram below. We currently charge $550 per set of twelve, if you send them in first.

Are you sure you want to turn the car into a coupe? The resale value alone will more than recover your expenses for fixing the top hydraulics and a new canvas if you do the work yourself.

Can't you unlock the rear with the soft top tool, so that you can lower the top manually?

i stripped the lock by the window on the drivers side... the passenger side came unlocked (front windshield)...

on the white one i keep the hard top on 24/7 only have had it off a few times i like the hard top... the soft top is nearly flawless on it...

a coupe isnt bad...

i cant find the locks anywhere else though. i tried to get help from john aka lowesguy a friend of mine but was unsuccessful in finding them. are there any pictures instead of diamgrams like of the actual car. the diagrams dont work for me in translating it to the car.
