1997 SL500 Convertible Top Issues
The red light console switch to activate convertible top & rool bar remain solid red which of course prevents the top to open / close.
Please help with ideas how to fix...thank you..jj

a solid red light on would indicate some process is not complete. Is the a honking sound coming from within your vehicle?
Follow the manual as to the procedure to deal with the top ( brake, park door open, key position ,windows in position etc. Let the procedure go to completion ( example the RST locks on all corners ) clicks and pops then see if the light goes off.

Good luck with your issue.

if you push the top button for a couple seconds and then release it the button should blink, the number of blinks is the error code. There are several threads on how to build a code reader, search them out and make one. The 36 pin port is under the hood above the pass side footwell, there is a rectangular plug to pop off then a round plug to unscrew to reveal the port. There are a lot of posts about top problems here and benzworld, the rst is overly complicated and has too many parts that can fail, Mercedes used too many engineers on the top and rollbar. Start searching and reading all the posts on the subject, and check out top hydraulics.com, Klaus is very helpfull. If I had to start over on mine I would rip out the hydraulics and operate it manually but I live in Phoenix and seldom need the top. good luck, Jerry
