help please sl60 seized engine
hi im trying to find some information on a 1997 sl60 amg repair manual
the car is parked up at the minute and gets started from time to time i started it on sunday and all was fine i had a few jobs to do so went out for a hour or so on my return i found the car stopped upon further investigation the inside of the car was wet the car smelled of burnt oil and there was a puddle of oil under the car and it was red hot still that hot that when i removed the dipstick it had melted the plastic end off it the car was just clicking when i tryed to start it
this morning the car would turn over but woulde'nt fire
i also noticed there was no oil pressure ? would the car be disabled from starting if no oil pressure present ?
any help or advise please
thanks ian

from all the indications your engine popped a leak while you were letting it idle and it ran out of oil and i guess that V12 is now a boat anchor..
i did not know there was a SL60 '97 so i'm not sure of the difference between my disabled SL600 '97 but my guess is they are either the same or close to it..
re. repair manual, ebay will get you the hacked official MBZ manual for about $12.. or alibaba will get you the same hacked manual and computer to plug into the CAN BUSS port under your left dash or under the hood, right side for a complete diagnosis of codes and such.. all for about $750..
though i have not been able to get it to work on my SL600 it DOES work pretty well on my E320 '00, S600 '01 and SL55 '06..
i have seen more than a few V12 mercedes engines on craigslist and ebay..
just FWIW, my SL600 is waiting for me to find a tech to replace a conductor plate and redo all the hydraulic seals in the top mechanisms.. all of them..
so a little further advice is exercise the top..
good luck with your seized engine..

My guess is if it got that hot it had no coolant. Lack of oil doesn't usually cause high temperatures. I'm thinking it got hot, lost a bearing, threw a rod that punched through the oil pan and then spilled the oil everywhere.
You last question makes no sense because the engine has no oil pressure when it is off. So in a way, lack of oil pressure won't cause it not to start, because it never has oil pressure before it starts (unless you crank it over for a long time before it gets running).
I think locating a repair manual is the last of your worries. You need to locate another engine or a machine shop to rebuild that one, if the block is saveable.
That's a rare car, it'd be nice to keep the numbers matching by rebuilding the motor. If you get another motor, crate the old one and tuck into your garage.

It more than likely won't fire because it no longer has compression among other things... You should do a compression test to confirm of course. As for a manual all you really need is a M119 manual. I have an acquaintance with a 94' or 95' AMG M119 6.0L engine, mind you it won't be inexpensive if he decided to sell. Keep us posted with your progress.

The SL60 motor is a bored out M119 V8...not a 12 cylinder.
...AMG started the program in 92' and went up to 2000 I think in very limited numbers...some being done as a factory option from new and more done after the fact.
There are actually quite a few SL60s here in the USA, few meaning dozens. Some boob actually traded a fully documented one to a local Audi dealer here in CT for 9 grand and it had like 19K on it, one of the salesmen smartly kept it for himself.
