300 SL 1991 CD player

I have a 1991 300SL. The radio manual mentions an optional 10 disc CD player that is controled by the standard radio head unit. I woul like to know where the CD player would be installed in the car, is it just a plug in installation, and if any 10 disc CD players are still available anywhere? Thanks, Tom

I am not sure about the 10 disc CD player, but there is the option (standard?) of 6 disc CD player for that car (not sure on the year range though). This CD player would be located in the trunk at the left side where there is a "ditch."

As for being "plug 'n play," I doubt it would be that simple due to the location of the player and the required wire probably not being there. Unless you see wires and/or a CD player mount, I would guess that you would have to do some work to install it.

Six disc players could be found on ebay, but make sure that you get one appropriate for your radio. I don't know too much about this, but I think they have a few different models that vary in connection type.

An option you could possibly opt for, if you have the appropriate connectors, is to get a multiple CD (6 or 10, I forgot) in dash CD player. There are some on ebay, but they tend to be quite pricey I think. This in dash CD player I speak of is OEM. If you consider this route, make sure it also comes with the radio code. You could also go aftermarket if you want...

1991 500SL
Tom,

My 91 500SL has the 10 CD changer mounted in the trunk. This unit is still available from Becker Audio US -- you can find them on the web. You might consider going with an aftermarket unit that transmits via FM to the receiver, however. The Becker unit is 1991 technology -- no buffer. During the winter with the hardtop on, my CD skips whenever I hit a minor pothole. During the summer with the top down or the softtop up, the rigidity of the car decreases enough to make the CD skip when encountering a manhole cover.

In a previous reply, I said that I had sent a Email to Tom, realizing that the post was quite old. I suggested that another option might be considered to the 6/10 trunk mounted CD changer, and others might be interested. I just installed in my (wife) 1992 500SL, a Panasonic CQ-C1300U CD player. This model plays Mp3 and WMA compressed CD's. I have burnt 10-12 WMA CD's, each containing 8-12 complete CD's (8-14 hours each). I removed all that Becker stuff; radio/tape head, in trunk tunner/amp, in trunk 10 CD changer, etc. The installation was simple, with only the antenna wire needed to be routed to the front using an extension.
I will post a picture of how it looks in the car if I can figure out how to post a picture.

I've a '92 with the 10 disc changer and have decided to keep everything up front in my car looking as original as possible.

Have put a hold on a new old stock MBZ 6disk changer part number 002 820 59 89 that MBZ reports will interchange perfectly for the original changer (and has 3 beam laser, etc., so the bouncing problems should be taken care of.)

But, the only problem is that the original changer had separate cables for power and signal and the new one has a combined 10pin connector. I have been told that MBZ even has a "Y" adapter cable that can be used to "combine" those two cables into one 10 pin plug.

Can anyone point me to where I could buy that cable and give me some idea of the cost. I'd even be willing to pay somebody to build an equivalent one, if that would be a better choice.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Chuck

SL BRABUS,
Don't I wish. That was on the Dyno, I made a high speed run and took a video as we did the Dyno. The car actually pulled 275.6 Rear Wheel HP and 298.8 Real Wheel Torque. Conservative conversions to engine HP/Torque by the Dyno shop says 344.5 HP / 373.5 Torque, not bad for a '92 with nearly 100,000 miles at that time. ; and it ran to the 160 MPH mark without any hesitation, smoooooooth.
