Best Memory of Driving your R129?

I had an urban circuit near our condo we lived at 10 years ago - where there were no cross streets and I could sit and wait for traffic ahead to clear.

Then I could mash the gas from stand still and reach 135 mph before needing to brake and corner.

Has anyone else ever smelled the rotten egg smell from the catalytic converters?

Top down in a forested area - gave great audio feedback as the car pulled through the gears.

I have a hand held video clip of one of those runs - somewhere.

The next best memories were from road trips on twisty roads In mountainous regions.

The R129 is a very capable car.

I have another vivid memory of driving top down in spring to a mountainous area ... having greasy snow accumulate to 3” thick over a couple of hours ... then being in absolute terror trying to manage power / ABS / ESC off the mountain.

Chris,
New Mexico, in the northern mountains has a great drive from Cimarron to Eagles nest Top down, fall colors with Aspen Elk herd delaying the drive!
glad for nature at it's best and the heater and seat warmers!

Looks like a nice 70 minutes round trip. Lots of bends, hills, great scenery, herds of wild animals and chilled air top down drive.

We drive from Vancouver Canada to Key West Florida and back in the SL one winter. We drove through Albuquerque on the way to the State Parks in south east Utah.

About 8 hours from Cimarron NM ... in Utah is Highway 12. https://scenicbyway12.com/

Rated one of the most scenic roads in the US. That was great - we drove from SW to NE on our way back to Canada. Top down of course.

Every bend had me wanting to stop to take a picture.
https://scenicbyway12.com/ from the 3 minutes mark to 10 minutes on this video that I found (the opposite direction that we drove) ... gives a good idea of what Highway 12 is like. One stretch is referred to as the Devils Backbone - both sides of the road in that stretch - no shoulders or ditches. Just steep slopes both sides.

Nova Scotia - Cape Breton

Trip to explore Nova Scotia from the Hudson Valley in NY. Left on the Labor day week-end, with sunshine, blue skies, 90°, and top down.. awesome trip.

Took the car ferry from Portsmouth, NH to Yarmouth Nova Scotia. Rented a cabin on the ferry and slept though the night, awaken fresh in the morning for docking in Yarmouth.

Drove all the way north while sight seeing and staying at B&B's. The north end of Nova Scotia is Cape Breton Island, and you need to drive the Cabot trail around the ocean side cliffs.

You will see the most awesome seascapes ever. We will be going back in a year or two... If your near the North-east, Nova Scotia and Cape Breton is a must see road trip.

On the way back we stopped in the Bay of Fundy area to see the extreme 50 foot tides, it's hard to believe until you see it.

Try Nova, it's really worth the drive....

We are in Western Canada ... so we will not be driving there. But we were just recently looking at flying to the East Coast to check it out.

Lucky you doing it in the R129!

We have driven at highway speeds into rain storms. Sustained medium to heavy rain - with the top down.

Especially if the rain cloud seems to be of a limited length.

The aerodynamics of the wind flowing over the hood and wind screen ... and the wiper ... makes the water at 60 mph flow to the A- Pilar’s and down the side windows.

The wind over the passenger cabin keeps the rain from hitting from above.

After a while the water tends to dribble in to the cabin off the side windows and splash down on us.

At that point we hope for a break in the weather or for the shelter of an overpass to stop under to put the top up.

People driving around us when this happens must think we are nuts.

California Hwy 1. One of the greatest drives on the planet from San Luis Obispo to Crescent City just south of the Oregon border. I've done this going both north and south at least twice in all of my cars. Just avoid doing this drive on week ends, too many huge land yachts lumbering along gumming up the works.

We have driven the entire length of the Pacific Coast Highway from LA up going north .... and the most scenic part you mentioned from north to south.

Driving south is best ... easier to pull off and stop at the view points.

Very scenic and a great top down drive.

Did you drive through the Red Wood forest? Pretty cool in a convertible!

Hmm, let me see here. I've only had the car for a few weeks.
But i'd say... best memory of would be.... oh yeah

A few weeks ago, a hot chick came up to me at the drive thru and asked if I wanted to have sex with her in the back seat of my car.
I looked up at her and said "I don't have back seats"

She replied.. 'EXACTLY"

I don't know what she meant but I sort of just smiled and said thank you.

While trying ti light up the tires with ESP off on my E 550 ... I recall the time when I switched ESP off on the SL 500 and burned a U Turn. Smoke and more smoke from those back tires .. that are made, normally to behave.
