SL/R129: F/S Front hydraulic cylinders ( rebuilt ) with latches.

Before I purchased "rebuilt" cylinders from anyone I'd ask three questions: (1) who did the work, (2) how extensive was the rebuild; i.e., were all internal components renewed or just the piston seal, and (3) what materials were used. In regard to (3), some rebuilds are being done using general-purpose o-rings, and I think these are inferior.
$325 is too much to pay, in my opinion, even if they were done by Klaus Witter's TopHydraulics or other professional.
Finally, it's my guess that most people needing work in this area require a replacement latch or a replacement pair of cylinders but not both. Between a friend and I we have at least four latches if anyone is interested.

The rebuild was done by Dennis Ficken, one of the first to rebuild these cylinders. Unlike the newer mb cylinders on the R230 you could replace the seals. The current MB list is $360 for each side. I had a 93 500sl, I now have a R230 and have just about every cylinder with latches, pump, top controller, etc, that I salvaged from a 38,000 mile 95
600sl. I used those front locks on my 93 and sent my set to be rebuilt.

I didn't know Dennis still offered his services. I used him long ago until I discovered how easy it is to disassemble a cylinder with no special tools and install a replacement seal. I can repair two front cylinders in about 45 minutes.
