Popping in reverse 2000 SL500

When backed out of the drive, the final significant turn developes a popping noise from the rear of the car. Not super loud, not a clunk. You put it in forward, drive away everything works wonderfully. I am naturally thinking of the cv axle assembly, especially any slip joint where the CV axle needs to get longer per me backing up and making a dramatic turn at the same time, or maybe the is there a planetary slip joint positraction that is popping?

This is bothering my wife quite a bit, her car (ME PORSCHE). Getting the rear end end torn apart looking for this little pop could be a bit expensive. The little pop does seem to be accompanied by a slight instability in the cars travel backward. Any body experience this little pop?

My 99 SL600 does that and I can't find the problem. Could it be a brake pad slipping into position?

Mechanic pointed out that rear suspension to frame rubber mounts are fractured, so that the rear wheels/tires could sort of jump about under the stress of turning dramatically while traveling backward we gave the go ahead to fix this. I will report if this fixes the noise

Geez! hope he doesn't mean sub frame bushings. If thats not the case then I would change all 8 rear links. If you have around 80k on them its time

Well it wont be cheap, and the parts required are apparently rare. I mentioned that I thought the there was a very small wheel/tire displacement that accompanied the popping, and so that maybe rear suspension geometry not being stable was the root cause. And we put her up, and you can stick your finger into some of the bushing fractures. So we will see. vehicle is at 100k+ miles, not value!

Those parts are really easy to buy AZ Autohaus and a lot on eBay OEM parts are readily available way cheaper than the Dealer
