I own a 2000 R129 which I recently purchased. Unfortunately the car came with only 1 key. The dealer was of no help so I emailed MBUSA. About a week after my email, a representative called me and the answer was, "MBUSA is aware of the problem. Please call back in 4 -6 months to see if we can make those keys".
I find it amazing that MB simply refuses to sell replacement keys to their loyal owners.

 

Bull****, MBUSA is not doing its job.

My 99 was imported from the US to the Middle East, and I managed to harass my local dealer into getting it for me.
Yes, it took many many months of harassing them with reminders, but MB Germany is now rolling them out.

Contact Germany.

Thank you vey much for your reply. So good to hear. I sent an email to Mercedes in Stuttgart as MBUSA did not seem to care at all. Your SL is the same color as mine! I'll keep everyone posted on my results.

And it all works perfectly? You used them? I saw this but was put off by the fact I would need to send off the only key I had and also that the disclaimer said they take no responsibility if it does not work...

 

The link above was taken from several R129 listings on Bring-a-Trailer from owners commenting on their experiences. I have not used them yet but plan to in the near future.

You can send them the Skreem / Immobox and keep your key.

The only guarantee MBZ gives you is difficulty/impossibility of getting one from them.

Just an option.
