I have a (R129) fever! Find me a mechanic

I've had Mercedes product before - a 96 W202 (really liked), a 98 W140 (loved; bank vault on wheels; indestructible), and an 08 W211 (love/hate relationship). But I've had a "sensible but unexciting" car for almost 5 years now and the fevers have come upon me. Hence the R129. It would be my only car, I only drive 7-8k/year and I figure it's good for that (famous last words perhaps).

Been reading up on the roof hydraulics and the other issues here. My big question is, for the things I can't do myself (and I'm willing to do or at least try some things), how does one go about finding an independent shop that doesn't insist on only using "Genuine Mercedes" replacement parts ($$$$$) in a 20 year old vehicle? Where I used to live, the guy I bought the car from recommended a place which honestly looked like a junkyard but they KNEW German cars and never steered me wrong. But I don't know any owners of older Mercedes product here in South Florida.

Should I take some aspirin and wait for the fevers to pass, or can you advise me on finding a good mechanic? Many thanks in advance.

Jim

As a start, Ask your local MB service department for the name of local independent shops they often deal with. A good Indy will often need the Dealership’s help with some tasks and parts. They know who is out there and who does a hood or not so good job.
