Ya, that's a good review and it's all positive(except for the cowl shake). Here's a review from edmunds.com of the 1999 SL500 sport, and it's almost all negative, I think the only thing they find good about it is the engine and transmission http://www.edmunds.com/used/1999/mer...rticleId=44164

That article seems to pan what was then an 8 year old styling in a time when car styling were beginning to change radically.

It also seemed to focus negatively on the cost of the car and options.

I found in an old article that the prices of the new 1999 SL 500 and SL 600 back then were almost exactly the same as the new base price in 2004 for the SL 500 and SL 600. MB seems to be delivering better value in 2004 than they were in 1999.
