Oil leak / soft top won't close

Hey all

I haven't driven my 1994 R129 320 much since before Covid, and it has largely been sitting on my driveway. I recently got the car MOT'd and have decided to spend some time and money getting it back to perfect condition.

I noticed a few days ago that the rear windscreen of the hard top had a large crack in it. I've just come back from Autoglass whereby I left the hard top to be repaired.

I drove the car home with the roof down, got home and attempted to put the soft top up. The soft top got stuck midway through the raising cycle and oil leaked heavily from the passenger side visor. I tried many times to close the soft top, to no avail.

I managed, by using the manual, to lock in 3 of the 4 points of the soft top manually, but was unable to lock the drivers side lock at the rear of the car.

My question and request for help is two fold. Firstly, and most importantly at this stage, when I go to collect the hard top from Autoglass on Monday, will I be able to put it back on the car, manually if need be? Secondly, is the leak causing the fact that the soft top won't close automatically? If so, how difficult and costly is this to fix?

Thanks in advance for any help of advice anyone can offer

hydraulic cylinders leaking

You should start reading now about the 12-13 cylinders that will need rebuilt. Your leak is the front cylinder above the visor. There are many write ups on the forum. good luck

Thanks for the reply I will definitely look into replacing the cylinders, however my first problem is a half closed roof and the car sitting in the rain.

I’m trying to manually clip the rear of the soft top in, by using the wrench and moving the levers accessed via the boot. The problem is, nothing is happening. When I look in the holes where the soft top should clip in, there is no movement when I move the levers.

is this something I can fix myself?

thanks

I should also have mentioned the car is a 98 model not 94. I made an error in my original post.

thanks
