(Half) Dead Cluster, Rough Shifts, and P1747

Hi folks. Question for ya…. Obviously there is a CAN bus / electrical / data issue occurring here. Suddenly, and unpredictably, my 1997 SL500 will throw a CEL (P1747), lose several gauges, and show an ASR and Oil warning light.

Obviously this is a wiring issue of some kind, not a mechanical one. The question is: what is supplying this data to the cluster and the gearbox simultaneously?

Any help appreciated!

Lucas.

At least one of the fuses is gone, easy to find in the fuse box. But there is a reason for this you have to find, fuses doent blow for no reason. Check the lights at the inside mirror for a short, check the door mirrors inside insulation and the third stop lamp.

I don’t think it’s a fuse. The issue goes away after a shutdown and restart, but always comes back.

And what if you take a quick look in the fuse box? I dont guess, i know (guess why ) What about the three possible errors in listed above? Do they all work?

Despite being an illogical culprit due to the intermittent nature of the issue, I would love for the cause to be a blown fuse. So I checked. Every. Single. One. They were all fine. What else ya got?

I’m sorry, I don’t follow. All the lights seem fine, except the dome lights which are blown and have been. Is that what you mean?

If there is a short, this will be the culprit. And you need to find the fuse that is falsely pretending to be good.

The R129 have no Can-bus, beside a very short connection inside the module box.

.
I gotta apologize. Ever since I reseated all those fuses the issue hasn’t reoccurred. Huh. I’ll be damned.

It's OK, you're not done yet. There's a reason the fuse blew, so be prepared to experience the problem again. The lamp housing on the rear view mirror may have become brittle, if you get a chance I'd check for a short there.
