It does not affect the speed.

2005 SL 500
You will not get any speed enhancement with the AMG package. They call it the "AMG performance package" but the change is only cosmetic. Additionally, you do not get the smoked tail lights or the quad exhaust with the package.

I like the look AMG package look. Some might disagree.

I believe the 05 SL 500 is a little faster than 6.1. A lot of those numbers are pre 7-speed automatic numbers. I think that when the 04 got the 7-speed, the numbers improved slightly.

Are we talking about the OEM 321 AMG Sport-Package of which I agree it is only cosmetic but you do not get the smoked tail lights or the quad exhausts?

If it is the SL55, then you are correct.

If it is some other package other than OEM then I have no idea.

2006 Gallardo 6-speed, 2005 SL55, BMW X3
According to the sales literature, the AMG "sport package" - the one with the AMG front apron, side skirts, and staggered wheels - increases the drag coefficient from 0.29 to 0.30. So in this respect it actually hurts performance.

SL55 AMG
The car is limited to 155 mph anyway (unless you have the limiter removed) so increased drag effectively means reduced acceleration and gas mileage.

If you want to make the car accelerate faster, you need to increase power and/or reduce weight or both, either of which will also reduce the ability of the car to put the power down on the road so, as SL65 owners will know, you would need to think about improving traction as well.
