Reduce Engine Oil Level ?
Hi -
Every now and then on the freeway usually at 80 mph or above; I will get a red warning message advising me to reduce the engine oil level.
I am guessing this is some sort of sensor defect. This happens rarely , always on the freeway and when I am speeding a bit. I was wondering if anyone else has seen this and / or knows anything about it.
One more thing, it happened several months ago and I did nothing about it with no ill effects. However I did see this same message recently which got me wondering about this again.
thx

I own a 2003 Launch Edition SL 500 - now with 48,000 miles and occasionally I have an opportunity to illegally hit 80 mph on a slight incline in the rural section of Pennsylvania on I- 80. Twice, when doing this, I received the REDUCE ENGINE OIL LEVEL warning (when going slightly up hill). Because of PA legal speed limit of 65 (+4 miles grace) I do not sustain that speed, and when I reduce back to 72mph, the warning light goes out. I had never observed any problem with this condition, and don't know why it occurrs. Any clues would be appreciated.

Never
Never had that problem with my either of my SL's, and more than on just a rare occasion I rocketed above 80 mph :v .
It is amazing how many little nuisance problems the 2003 SL's had. That sucks for owners who are excited about getting a new model when it hits the streets. If I understand things correctly, it seems that most new models are released earlier in Europe, so it seems to make sense that more of these items would be caught and fixed before arrival in the States.
Anyways enjoy.

This happned to me more than a dozen times. Always when driving about70 to 80 mph on the freeway. I did not "reduce oil level" or did anything else. I have 2003 SL 500 with 35K miles.
