What's the best colour on the SL?
I'm really bad at making decisions and all the colours on the SL look magnificent! Which colour do you think is best on this amazing roadster? Also, can u tell me what colour this is? I think it's topaz blue but I'm not sure.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Well of course Brilliant silver is the best color for all of mercedes' models. I hate to have the same thing as my neighbor so i usually try something a little different.
I think an SL deserves a light color like, brilliant, diamond, or white looks great too, they really shows the lines of the car well. Black or other dark colors kinda hides the contours of the car, the face of the car. Don't get me wrong, black is beautiful, but for a sports car, where lines are important, you want people to admire the cars' design. Right now, my place in line should assure me an SL500 in summer/fall '03, my color choice would be Magma red.

Hmm, I agree that light colours look better on the SL than dark colours, but i don't really like non-metallic colours. I do like the firemist red colour though. For some reason, there aren't many brilliant silver SL's where I come from. In fact, i haven't seen a single SL in that colour over here. In my opinion, it's not the best colour on the SL, however, it looks amazing with the berry red interior and I love the red interior. Some of the colours that I love are diamond silver, desert silver, topaz blue (aegean blue) and firemist red. However, none of them look good with the red interior so.....

DufaSL: that color looks like Aegean blue to me. Quite frankly, that and white are my two considerations, and I can't figure out which way to go.
White with the dark charcoal interior, or Aegean blue wiht a grey interior. Aaargh.

I'd definitely go for the blue over light grey.
I'm having silver and red which I know is a little lacking in imagination since so much of the promotional stuff is this color combination but since I already have a blue 129 SL with grey interior (which I'm keeping), I wanted a change.
A brochure I've seen advises berry red only with brilliant silver and black though I'd be interested in seeing it with the dark green metallic. Seeing but not buying....
They did the SLK in yellow and if you wanted to make a statement, that was it, but not exactly a stealth car. How about yellow with red interior? There's a color combo to transport you back to the 60's...

I am new to the forum and have a 500 SL on order and trying to decide the best colour. I like JASPER BLUE (called Orion Blue in the US I think) but have only seen this on C class and CLK. Has anyone seen a Jasper SL and does anyone have a picture to post.
Thanks

Felix, that colour looks like diamond silver to me. It's a metallic silver colour that has a blue touch to it and I think it looks gorgeous. If only it looked as good with the berry red interior...

hmmmm
Now it depends which SL you are talking about when choosing colors.
For an SL500, I believe a wider range look nice because of the possible exterior/interior combos.
e.g. silver/black, silver/red, black/beige, titanite red metallic/beige, topaz blue/beige, etc. Personally on an SL500 I think I would go for teh topaz blue/ beige as in the first photo above.
For an SL55 AMG, the range narrows. Just like a Ferrari has to be red, a AMG Mercedes has to be silver. Silver brings out all the curves and contrasts well with the black mesh on the front and rear bumpers. However, other possible good combos I believe are: silver/black/ silver/berry red Black/black TansaniteBlue/Grey Tansanite Blue/black.
Black and TBlue both have that meaness to them.

we had a SL55 AMG in our showroom this week, it was black/berry red, looks awsome with the aluminium parts inside. even the new glass-roof was on board.

Let's face it, silver and blue are safe choices and black is ok if you're willing to do the work or pay someone to keep it clean. With other colors, there's a risk it will not work. I had a gold Porsche with brown pin-stripe interior once. What a mistake that was. My current 129 SL is blue (as you might guess) and my SL55 is going to be silver. I'm a chicken....

The problem is that I like the Diamond Silver and Desert Silver colours the most; however, I love the berry red interior and it doesn't go with either of them. So, I'm thinking about Brilliant Silver which many people think is the best colour for the SL. Also, a Brilliant Silver SL is rare over here.

Diamond Silver w/ Berry Red Interior
DufaSl you are right, the berry red interior just doesn't go with the desert silver. However, berry red interior with Diamond Silver is stunning. It is probably the required black birdseye maple that comes with the berry red interior that ties the two colors together so well.
Go to the following url to see diamond silver with berry red:

Each to his own I guess, I think the red looks great, nice historical link back to the old gullwing. Especially for the SL55, it's that little bit different and it looks better for real than in the pictures.

Red is somewhat muted
I've yet to see a photo that really acurately depicts the shade of red correctly. It is somewhat muted from the colors as linked above. blueSL is correct, you have to see it in person. It really does look better than the greys and blacks that dominate most of the SL interiors - just have to be careful you don't order red with the wrong color exterior as it will clash with green or desert silver. Looks best with black, white, silver, and diamond silver. Would also be OK with magma red, but have my doubts about how it would go with the firemist red.
Also as a custom interior for which you get the priviledge of paying an additional thousand bucks for, it seems the upholstry people do an extra job on making sure the fit and finish of the overall interior are top notch.

Agree with the comment about how it looks. There are some pictures on the SL55 forum of a Hong Kong SL with berry red which looks more orange on my monitor. In real life, it's like raspberries, only darker, as northbenz says, somewhat muted.
But you could do a lot worse than choose diamond silver with dark grey. What color you choose to go with the travertine beige, I have yet to figure out.

Hmm, thanks for the pics northbenz although the pictures don't really show how a diamond silver SL would look with the berry red interior since they really only show the interior. If anyone has anymore pictures of a diamond silver SL with the berry red interior, please share them with us.

DufaSL - you can play around with the previously provided links by changing the numbers on the URL to get more photos of the Diamond Silver SL and its red interior. Note the two listed are 1/6 and 1/8. In place of the 6 or 8 substitute 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Most of the other photos are of the full car though the red interior is less visible than in photos 1/6 and 1/8.
