I'm doing a Euro Delivery this spring and I'm trying to figure out how much luggage I can fit. I measured the trunk, but missed the rear shelf. Mercedes sell a custom bag that measures 32x13x12 for $450. I found nice duffle that measures 30.5x17.5x10.5 for $110. I know, buying an SL and worried about a few hundred bucks, but it will make the misses happy. Anyway, would having a bag that's 4.5" taller fit?

The 32x13x12 for $450.00, came with our 2007 SL550 50th Edition. It is a nice black leather bag with lots of storage. I don't think we will ever use it. We will keep it in a big plastic bag in the attic till we sell the car.

That being said, I measured the rear shelf behind the seats. You will have approxamately 37 inches wide, 24 inches high to the ceiling and 12 inches deep. Depending on how you position the seats may add a few more inches to the depth.

Forgot to add that the bag for $450.00 fits just to the top of the rear window shelf. This way you can use the straps that look like seat belts to hold the bag in place.

I found one of the Mercedes bags on the internet last year. Bought it for my Sl for 175.00. Awkward size but works well. Mercedes also had some in stock but yes, they did want 450.00 for them. Try e-bay; you might get lucky. The one I bought was never used and still bagged. The people who bought the car just didn't need it.

Thanks for the feedback. I went ahead and ordered the bag I was looking at - I think it's close enough. I ordered three of that size and another. The misses & I are doing a two week tour through Stuttgart(x3), Freiburg(x2), Lake Genva(x4), Zurich(x1), & Munich(x3). I figure we need to squeeze a week's worth clothes in the SL & utilize hotel laundry half-way through. Hopefully we can make it all fit.

Bought an SL bag from the dealer for behind the seats. It's an awkward shape bit holds quite a bit. There's a previous thread here which gives the max dimensions for under the luggage cover in the boot(trunk). You can get a fair-sized case in there.

Hope the weather's good so you won't need bulky clothes! Enjoy your trip.
