Now what?
I was driving my '03 SL500 to Florida when I heard a scraping sound. I pulled over and found a piece of hard black material hanging down and scraping the road. I managed to pull it off and continue the trip. Now I'm wondering what it was? Heat shield of some kind? It was about 2/3 back on the driver side. Any bad stuff going to happen?

Look at the resonator post below. The picture of the SL on the lift shows you what was probably dragging - the bottom of the car has plastic panels, which I believe aid aerodynamics. On my old '03 SL500 a couple of bolts fell out from the tray below the engine and it started scraping when the air caught it. My dealer replaced free of charge since it was shortly after an oil/filter change and I believe they didnt secure correctly afterwards.
I would look into replacing yours.
