I am a newbie, but have seen this notation on used 500SL's. Can you clarify if this is "something special?"

The 5L M113 twin spark v8s have been used in most MB chassis. The E500, CLK500, ML500, SL500, S500, G500, CL500, R500, and CLS500 all share it. It's a damn good engine family, but not exclusive to the SL.
