C/S button

Ok, this newbee's got another one, no responses yet from anyone, shucks, but its INDEPENDENCE DAY!!! I'll try to be patient
Anyway, the c/s button, i read the owners manual but still i dont think i get it.
Im not sure what S position gains you. At first I thought it would cause faster or harder autoshifts between gears, but if that is going on it is sure difficult to tell. Not sure if this feature is active both in Drive (D) as well of while maunally shifting. By the way, why is there so little explanation in the manual?
BTWA, anyone know what means - woowoo, wwf, nix, and rice icons? thank you.

If there's a site where the car's (sl) details are more completely explained by manufacturer, please advise.
Ok, thats it for now, I'll just keep asking as questions appear to me, hope after holiday someone helps me out.
all the best!

Does that mean the car will go off the line faster by starting in sport position (1st gear)?

Yes. Starting off in 1st gear is going to help get you
going quicker. !

I use the "sport Mode" almost all the time. The "C" mode is helpfull
when it rains or in snow. Much easier to start in 2nd gear
when dealing with reduced traction.

Wow. And I thought it was pretty quick staring in the comfort mode. Can't wait to test it out. Thanks for the info!

wow, i could have sworn i responded to E55jay earlier today but the post seems to have been scratched, anyone else loosing posts.
well I recall saying "thank you" for the answer to my question.

I remember now, reading that when i first got the car, c starts in second gear for a gentler start, but you know in those manuals they dont want to get too technical, so i was thinking maybe the c/s thing has other influences on the operation/performance of the car, and if so where could i find a complete explanation of the tecnical aspects of the car? anyone know?
Im guessing there's a write up somewhere explaining the complete technical operation of the car, at Benz somewhere, may be accessible via inet, anyone ever seen it. FOr instance i know Porsche produces a 911 book soft cover explaining much more about the car than is in the drivers manual, very revealing.
I really gotta know what ther hell im doing when im behind the wheel, dig.

from the manual...

Select C for comfort driving:

The vehicle starts out in second
gear (both forward and reverse) for
gentler starts. This does not apply if
full throttle is applied or gear
range 1 is selected.

 Traction and driving stability are
improved on icy roads.

 Upshifts occur earlier even when
you give more gas. The engine then
operates at lower rpms and the
wheels are less likely to spin.

OK. Then if you go full throttle in comfort mode, it will start in first anyway! Thanks.

I have noticed while driving equally that I get approximately 1.5 miles per gallon better fuel range driving in S as opposed to C.

now i wonder why that is, i wouldnt have guessed running the revs up higher before shifts would improve mileage.

Has anyone noticed the amazing time clocked by a CLS55amg in the topgear power laps? I cant believe it. I dont believe it!
Its in there with the Lotus Exige and new corvette. Far as i know no other stock Mercedes comes close to these sports cars.
Anyone see that show.
I know its std horsepower, 500, not beefed up.

In S mode the 7 speed tranny will downshift more agressively as you are slowing down for a stop. This makes it a little harder to smoothly modulate your stop. Your passengers will likely notice the difference between S and C more than you do. In C the tranny will resist downshifting when a light acceleration is asked for. It results in a smoother less jerky drive. This is quite obvious with the 63 engine and 7-speed tranny. With the 5 speed in the 600 it is much harder to tell the difference between C and S other than less lag as when calling for sudden acceleration as the tranny will often be in 1 higher gear when cruising.

Scotsman, can you point us to the SLR supercar description? The dealer had the car roped off so this is my only chance of fiddling with the amazing interior, virtually.

Worldwide. I've hardly used it once the novelty wore off but maybe if I drove a lot I would. Certainly speaking phone names was good while keeping your eyes on the road rather than paging through menus on COMAND.

All very well, but in my head questions, ex;
How i tell if in my car? Incl in P2 pkg?
Use right side lever in 07 model year? Or engage some other way?
Uses? Tele yes, but what about sat/nav? Is it for sat/nav too?

Thanks, and drive careful. (the more that do, the less i have to!)
