Yes

1) electronic lowering module (about $2k for Kleemann, $1k for Lorinser)

2) RB Tech suspension part $500-600 total

3) TWS Lowering Kit $400

4) Modifed OEM part $who knows?

r230 is lowered the same way as all airmatic/abc cars (S, CL, and New E). Tons of posts regarding this, use the search function.

My guess is aesthetics.

Lowering a car with standard shocks/springs is done for the handling and looks.

However, lowering an air suspension car is done only for aesthetics. That's not a bad thing. Perception/apperance plays an important role in our lives, no?

Some cars are already pretty low. Corvettes come to mind.

Clearance issue is the most important thing. They don't want customers coming back complaining about how they hit curbs or scrapped on driveways, etc

Lowering??? more

The new R230 SL500 Electronic Height Adjustment controls allows you to raise the car higher 2 knotches. It kind of looks like a Cross Country Volvo, however, in the standard height, at the speeds above 70mph, it lowers itself one inch for better handling and control...

If you lower the car with the after market stuff, it may mess up your car, and may rub as well...
