Strange noise when I cold start...please advise

Lately when I cold start my SL, for the frst minute or so it sounds like a belt or something under the hood is rattling (like tin can noises if that makes sense at all). I also hear a bit of a strange whistling. Both go away within a minute. I took it to the dealer but of course it wouldnt replicate the noises for them. Should I be worried enough to leave it there over night? Anyone else ever have this issue?

Thanks,
Cy

Thats Normal.

Its the suspension charging it self up when you open the door.
Car will do this if it has sat for a few days.

Dont worry about it.

Really? That could be one of the noises but the other one sounds like a loose tensioner or something...like a rock in a tin can.

Mine sounds like a compressor coming online.
If your not used to it it would sound like something wrong.
This is before I turn the key.
After starting the car. It cycles and it does sound a bit "Belty" until it warms.
But mine has the Super Charger unit to add to the warm up process.

But its not "Rock in a Can" ???
If its a metallic sound then time to somehow record it or get it
to do this behavior at the dealer.

Good Luck.....

Take it to the shop and leave it over night.

May be a cracked ceramic in the CAT converter. As it warms up the rattle is gone.

It also seems to squeal a bit at the same moment like an air leak or something....it all goes away in a few minutes and the car drives like usual. I am probably going to take it in but Id hate to have a C rental for the last weeks of my lease.

Very common problem on older SLs. Most likely the bearings. Easy and cheap to replace. Should also replace pulley at the same time.

What "bearings"? Need more info...

as my 05 makes similar noises. I also think it's coming from the compressor...but is less noisy with it on than off.
