2004 SL600 Surging Problem

Hello all !

I have a 2004 SL600 with about 38k miles on it. It is my first Mercedes and it is by far my favorite car ever. While driving the car seems to surge, jerking me back and forth. It happens usually at 1200-1600 RPMs at about 40-45mph. It does it at other speeds/gears but always in the 1200-1600 RPM range. It is very noticeable, my passenger can feel it without me saying anything.

The RPMs jump about 200 up and down. The speed also jumps 1-3mph. It does it with the accelerator pressed or while coasting.

At first I thought it was the accelerator, but it does it with the cruise control set too.

I took it to the dealership and they couldn't reproduce it. They checked the codes and nothing was set. I've checked the codes everyday and nothing is set.

I am hoping someone here has had a simular problem and can give me some hints to help the dealership diagnose the problem.

Thanks !!

I own a SL600 and it does not do that. Maybe you have some bad gas. Try a couple of tanks of Chevron which contains Techron. It cleans injectors and really works. I use it all the time.

Take it to the dealer and have them plug it into the computer.

I have the same problem with my new 2003 SL600. Did you find an answer?

No. It still does it. I've just learned to drive over the RPM range that it occurs

That is probably not the best answer. If it were me I would have to get to the bottom of it and have it fixed. Usually when you let little problems go, they turn into big ones.

I'm more interested in knowing why it only seems to affect early SL600's and not SL500's.

gas recirculation valve at the charcoal canister is stuck. New one will cost around $130.

Really ? I am still under MB Extended warranty - I will take it in ASAP.

Any tips on how I can better explain this to the dealership ? Is there anything else that a stuck recirculation valve would cause ?

SL500 and A-CLASS
It maybe a control device on the transmission. I had the same issue. The dealer fix it under warranty.

Finally Fixed Surging Problem

About a month ago, 1 in every 20-30 starts the car would sputter and stall. Then start right back up like nothing happened. Check engine light on.

Took it in. Told it was a misfire and I need to use Chevron Gas only. I use Shell 91.

Took it in 2nd time. Told it was a fluke. Need to run "bad gas" out of system.

Took it in 3rd time. Replaced Ignition Control Module due to codes 2050, 2053, 2055, 2056, 2057, 2059, 205c.

The car isn't any faster, but it a LOT smoother in city driving. Its like a different car when under 50mph. The surging problem is gone.
