Took the plunge and bought a 2008 SL550!
Hey guys,
Just took the plunge last night and bought a new 2008 SL550. It's Blk/blk with P1, trim, pano, elec. trunk, and voice. We got it for just under $22,000 off MSRP.
I'm just wondering if you guys can give me any suggestions as to the best method of breaking it in? So far, I've been told to keep the car under 4000rpm for the first 1000 miles...
I will post a few pics later in this thread.

Congratulations on your new car.
I think Mercedes wants you to treat her gently (varying engine speeds, no full throttle, no racing etc). It may take some patience to keep it to a "slowroll" for the first 1000 miles but well worth it in the end, since it will give the car (engine and transmission) many years of service. And judging by the uglified 2009 SL's coming, you may want to keep your 2008 Black Beauty for a lifetime. Good Price, Good Timing, Good Luck.

Agree with Dans_SL. Know it will be hard by take it easy as the book says. No cruise control or kickdown just vary the speed.
Congrats on the new car - enjoy!

As everyone above has said. Just keep it easy and variable on engine RPM.
Break it in right and you will have an engine that will almost never need oil added between service every 10K miles. Patience is the keyword.
Once its broken in then you can apply the hammer...
Enjoy

I was told to keep the revs down until the oil was at operating temp. It would then be okay to drive it relatively normally with the above considerations. Seems to have worked well on the ML.

On the contrary, I've read on various forums that actually driving it hard/somewhat hard tends to yield an overall faster car. In fact, on the IS300.net board, one of the members with the quickest stock IS300's in 0-60 and1/4 mile times broke it in by driving it hard...Some people swear by it. As for me I'm in the middle as to whether I not I believe it. In any case, ENJOY the car!

Hmmm, I've heard that too. However, I don't want to take any chances so I probably won't drive it too hard...
