Winter tires in SL 500
On my 2003 Launch Edition SL500, I replaced original rims (wider rear rims) with four new AMG similar sized rims and 4 new Pirelli Winter 240 SnoSport tires - sized 255/40VR18. I have not noticed any appreciable difference in ride; however, the improvent in traction in snow and ice is quite significant. I am very pleased with this decision---Giff Albright of State College, PA-----(my original regular tires had been driven for 7500 miles and the SNOW tires really felt "NEW" (smooth ride).)

I am glad to hear that you like them especially given the fact that for the SL55, it is the ONLY winter tire available.
I was quoted $3200 by Mercedes for the set. Somewhat pricey given that you can get a 17" set for $1300

Please note - I got my set of 4 Pirellis and 4-- 5 spoke AMG wheels described above from TireRack (coordinated, ordered, installed and billed by my Mercedes Dealer)AS A COURTESY -- for less than the price you mention.
