SL/R230: Top won't close

Top won't close

Had this problem a couple weeks ago. Traveling and storm ahead so we pulled over to close the top and it stopped midway in the cycle. *****ttttt!!!!! Storm getting closer and we called the dealer and told us to hold up the flaps in the rear of the top. It worked and we stayed dry.

Now it keeps happening. Hate to have to do this every time we open and close the top.

Has anyone had this problem? What's the fix? Cost???

Take it to a dealer.

Most likely needs the Fluid topped off.

But there are other items that can affect this situation.

This is not a question for this forum ......
This is a question for the dealer.

This shows WHY Extended Warranties are a necessity
with Mercilous Benz's.

You can go to http://www.mercedestechstore.com/pdfs/index.htm and find some pdf files about the R230 and there a couple on roof operation. Scroll down to the Files for 318 R230 Training and the last file is a diagnostic.

The roof mechanism is a complex bugger.

Agreed, this is a question for the dealer. Otherwise, you get a post saying the fluid needs to be topped off No fluids have anything to do with the top.

What warning message are you getting? I had a problem with one of the flaps last summer and it had to be replaced, $1000. I thought that was a relatively lucky fix....major top problems can run $3000-5000.

Been there...done that. You need a new hydraulic pump. About $1900 in Pennsylvania. Glad I had an extended warranty.

The cause of your problem may be a blown fuse. If you replace the fuse yourself, the cost is measured in pennies. If a dealer replaces the fuse, I guess the cost will be $150-$300.

Most of the top components are actuated by hydraulics, but the side flaps are operated by an electric motor. Your problem could be a blown fuse (fuse #69), the motor, or the flap mechanism.

The fuse is located in a module under the storage compartment behind the left-side seat. Unfortunately, you need to remove some of the interior just to see the fuse. To do this yourself you will probably have to have a copy of the WIS software or the R230 Tech DVD sold by MBUSA for step-by-step instructions.

Another check would be to see if power is reaching the motor. This would require a basic electronic multimeter to measure voltage, and you would need to remove the paneling in the left side of the trunk. Again, the WIS or Tech DVD is needed.

You can troubleshoot and repair this problem youself and save hundreds of dollars, or you can pay a shop. It's up to you.
