Question: wheels for my 2005 SL500

Hey Gang:

Here's the deal.....I want to put 19 or 20 inch wheels on my SL500 (Mars Red). I think black wheels will look really cool, especially once I lower this thing.

Questions:

Do I go with 19 or 20 inch rims?
I've seen nice wheels selling for $250/each on Tire Rack, but some wheels go for over $1,000 each. Why the huge price differential?

Your thoughts are appreciated.....

There can be a big difference in wheel prices and quality. Forged are usually more expensive than cast. Also, the lighter the wheel is, the more expensive they can be. Since the wheel and tire is your only connection between the car and the road, it is best to go with the "You get what you pay for" theory.

I personally like OEM wheels, as they are designed for the car. There are never fit challenges, but you are restricted as to styling.

Many of our clients, who are performance orientated come in with these huge (and heavy) aftermarket wheels and they don't get the most out of their performance improvements as they would have, had they used a lighter wheel. Sometimes it's a choice between bling and go.

I personally like the OEM AMG split wheel. Take a look at my car on our MB/AMG page. http://www.veloceperformance.com/mercedes.htm

I wouldn't go larger than 19 because with 20s you will be running very low profile tires (25 and 30 series). Unless the roads you drive are really good, you are looking at destroyed tires and bent rims. Also with that low of a profile, the ride will be much harsher than stock.

And I've got 20" CL2's from Nitros Garage Wheels

The ride, even with the low profile tires (285/30x20 rear, and 245/35x20 front) is still very nice.
Thank you MBz, for a very accommodating suspension.

I have the 19" AMG SL65 wheels on my SL55.
Suggest staying OEM as well. This is a very heavy car.
Most of the SL`s I have been in with the 20`s are a little rough.
Its the "Show or Go" choice.

I disagree!!!! my car rides extremely smooth on 20" !!! no complaint here. even bumpy roads , most of the smoothness problems has to do with tire quality.I'm VERY PLEASED with the Yokohama S-drive which delivers a very smooth and great handling ride 245/35 F 285/30 R

I agree on staying OEM , that is why i picked MANDRUS they make quality wheels for MB ONLY and as good as OEM!!!! PROVIDING PERFECT FACTORY FITMENT
