Loud Buzzing noise when operating roof...

Very close to closing on a deal on an 05. Only issue found was there is a loud buzzing noise when the roof goes up and down. Comes from the pump in the trunk.

A friend who is an MB Tech verified that the pump is not leaking, however wasnt 100% sure if it was going out or what. The roof went up and down with no problems or hesitation.

Hard to describe the sound, but he knew it should of been silent humming vs. loud buzzing...anyone?

This could be a deal breaker maybe..

Something might be loose and touching something else to create that buzzing sound. Iam guessing check the pump in the trunk to see if its loose, or if other parts of the rooftop assembly are loose. While operating the roof, the vibration of the loose parts might cause a loud buzzing sound.

Should be an almost completely silent operation.

If it's under warranty, have the seller take it to the dealer and get it looked at. Even if it isn't under warranty I wouldn't buy without having a dealer diagnose the problem.

If the seller refuses, I would walk.

Ditto -- unless he's willing to take the price down for the replacement cost of the mechanism so you can take care of it yourself. I'm surprised he didn't fix it before trying to sell it -- nothing says "unmaintained" like loud buzzing noises that shouldn't be there.

My top operates silently. Well, very silently since the body shop broke it. But when it's fixed it will be very quiet.

This might be the quote of the year....the sales guy just told me that " the roof is normal, this isnt a lexus, its mercedes, suppose to be like that- noisy, even BMW is like this"

I almost hung up. He told me to then take it to any MB dealership for a private inspection, so we find out for sure. Then im out $200 or so from my own pocket.

The sad part is other than this , the car looks pretty good....

Salesman is definitely an a-hole. I wouldn't let this kill the deal if the car seems otherwise clean and a PPI checks out.

Yeah to put in kindest words, english is his second language, and the barrier is causing this deal to be alot harder than it should be.

I mentioned I have a few friends with SL's that the roof is nice and quiet. He has now said to bring those cars in to see them, no more dealer inspection, and if my buddys car roof operation is silent, then he will compare and take care of it.

WOW. I think I've spoken with him for the last time. sucks again because it seemed like a good car.

There is a service bulletin sent to the dealers about loud pump operation which explains the cause possibly being an air bubble trapped within the pump. The fix is to simply unbolt the pump from its mount, prop it up, and cycle the top a few times.

Yes I saw this as well in a search I did last night. My tech buddy doesnt think there is anything really wrong with the pump, but the sales guy is really refusing to work with me at all, and is conflicting with everything "say this, say that" type pitch...I'll give it maybe one more shot in a few days...

Yeah -- I'll stay with the dealers. May be more expensive, but at least there's basic inspection at least, plus CPO.

I'd move along and keep looking. What you're running into is why I bought a CPO car from a dealer. The car was freshly serviced (service B), had brand new tires, no issues and 2 1/2 years warranty. Sure it cost a little more but it was worth it to me.
