Hot Air Blowing In From Vents

Not sure if this is normal but when I drive without my AC on and recycle air button pressed, there is hot air blowing in where my pedals are on the driver side. I tried to press the recycle air button when the AC is off but it does not light up. So hot air comes in from the bottom if the AC is not on. Its gets really warm down there. Is this normal? Does anybody know what could be wrong? Can I use recycled air even though the AC is not on? Please help. Car has no warranty so I am trying to avoid bringing my SL into the dealership. Thanks for your insight.

I just asked the service manager I go to if it's normal for the floor vents to blow hotter than the main vents, and he said that he remembered that this was pretty common for the SL's, from his tech days. Now, he didn't say if it was intentional mind you...

Do you have automatic air distribution selected? If so, have you tried going into manual mode and selecting to send air to the footwell? See page 174 of the manual.
