Mercedes SL, How Rare A Car?

Does anyone have the Mercedes SL production numbers? How many (2003-2008) SL's were made in total? How many were made just for America? Thanks in advance.

Definitely not. I see probably at least 15 a day. But I do live in Scottsdale, AZ.

Dan, I don't know the total numbers on the R230, but as far as how many you see on the street, I think it all depends on where you live. If you live in Miami or LA, I'm sure they're very common.

As for me, I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I live in a small midwestern town that has Winter weather 6 months a year. I never see another SL in town, and if I do he usually has out of state plates. We all know an SL is not an Exotic class car, but in a less metropolitan area it gets a LOT of attention.

I just purchased my new to me SL600. Picked it up in Chicago and drove straight back to Maryland. Guess how many SL's I saw on that 705 mile trip. Zero...nadda...none...zilch. I don't consider them rare, per se, but odd that I didn't see one, in any engine flavor.

I will say that I've never, EVER seen another SL600 on the road, and I live in the DC metro area.

In the Raleigh Durham area of North Carolina I see many different SL models in Silver then some Black or Blue, but rare to see red or white.
The breakdown of 500, 550, 600, 55 and 65 gets more difficult to know without seeing them up close, or stopped.

Looks like the AMG SL numbers start dwindling toward the end ot the production run...pretty much expected trend. In the DC metro area I see MBs very frequently although majority are S, CL, CLK and ML...there are SLs as well but they are not as common, I think because of the climate, not ideal vert area like say Miami or SoCal. This said I've seen all varients, SL600 in Tysons the other day on 20"OZ wheels for example; at the docs office saw 2 SLs, ond Democracy and Old Georgetown Rd saw a nice SL65 the next lane over...on the hwy etc..etc...I've seen more SL65s here than 55s and of all of them the SL500 is the one seen most here; followed closely by the SL600 which I've seen several of as well. ... rumor has it there is one SL600 with part of the v12 fender badge missing running around here as well... haven't seen that one yet though...

I forgot that you rub elbows in the high-brow part of town, whilst I normally run behind F150's and hay-bailers up in Frederick.

And rumor has it, that the new SL600 in town has had it's badge replaced. I'm not saying, I'm just saying....

2004 SL600
I consider the SL600 to be the rarest out of the bunch. 500,550s,55s, and 63s are common around my area. Who cares the SL will always be one of the greatest in the world. Not to mention the first roadster with a hardtop that goes down in about 16 sec
