Check Engine light. Help!!

I am hoping to get some clues as to what is happening with our SL!

Late 04 SL600...42K miles. Came from the office today to get in the car and started it up and unlike this morning when it drove perfectly, the car sounded really loud (almost like if there is a hole in the exhaust), running rough with no power and the light smell of gas.

I have never had an issue with the car except a similar scenario a couple months back when the same thing happened for a few minutes.
That time the engine light stayed on but the car drove perfectly afterwards. MB said there was an engine misfire error code, but everything checked out perfect. They just cleared the code.

The only other thing that was noteworthy is that many months ago, the purge valve made an occasional ticking noise that would go away...

Sorry about the lengthy write-up, but this time the issue appears to persist. I drove home as I had an appointment and was also hoping that the issue would clear itself up again.

Any thoughts what this could be?

Thanks!

So I had the same problem today on my 05 SL600. Drove fine about 18 miles down to Lowes. Came out & started the car, but it stalled right away. I restatred it & it had no powe & that same "hole in the muffler" sound. I had to stop/restart it several times before it was driveable. After that the Check Engine light remained on (so I guess the engine threw some codes), but now it appears to drive ok.

I was sitting in traffic for about 30 minutes on the way, not that that should matter.

Car has less than 7K miles on it & is still under the certified warranty so Ill take it to the MB dealer, but i'd be curious if this is a frequent/known issue.

For me, it turned out to by the ignition control module (don't remember if this was the exact name) which MB replaced for free, even though my car was already out of warranty. I did pay for the labor.

So far, so good...

Thanks for the reply, always good to have some information to bounce off of what the service departments tells you. You don't happen to remember which codes your enging threw?

Don't remember the actual codes, but they were misfires on the right side of the engine, so the engine probably ended up driving only on six cylinders...

I was concerned about the ignition coils, which is an easy $2K+ repair...

Well, I brought it in today, they're telling me the engine threw intercooler codes. It's covered under CPO, but I have to bring it back another day when they have the parts & they can wait for the engine to cool off.

Does it sound reasonable or ??
