SL/R230: surge protection when cutting off mufflers??

surge protection when cutting off mufflers??
when you guys cut off your mufflers and welded on straight pipes did you need to use a surge protector? my mufflers have a ground strap welded to them and the shop said they would need to use a surge protector before they could weld onto the exhaust pipe does that sound right? what did you guys do?? Pat.
