SL/R230: mp3 DVD

mp3 DVD
This is not a totally new question, but the most recent answers are a couple of years old, so maybe someone has solved this recently.
2007 SL550. Plays MP3 CDs no problem in the top CD slot (not changer). I'd like it to be able to play MP3 DVD in the top slot, thus enabling me to add almost 6 times as many songs. Manual says DVDs should work there and several older posts have indicated users have gotten DVD MP3's to work if written as a data disk. The manual also says it should work with -R or +R types of DVDs.
I used to have a full head of hair! Can now quote the manual line and verse. I stop complete strangers on the street and ask them if they have ever created MP3 DVDs for their car. Still get "unrecognized format" or something similar.
Have tried:
(a) High quality DVDs
(b) Burning the DVDs as Data disk using unprotected MP3 files
(c) Buring with different types of software, including iTunes, Vista default and some others
(d) Adding songs to the root directory, not with individual directories
(e) Burning using the "universal" format not ISO as directed in the manual.
Can anyone provide a detailed, step by step of their process for making this work? ...including the type of DVD they use, the software for burning and the software settings, how the song files look once burned to the disk (in folders? .mp3 extension?).
Thanks! Mike
