Brakes???

Ok so the dealer says I need new brakes front and back. My question is should I do them myself or have the dealer do them. I have done my own brakes on all of my cars until I tried it on my BMW 745 it needed some special tool to take them off and it had built in sensors that needed to be replaced at the same time as the brakes.

Has anyone done their own brakes on a 03 500 and is there anything special about it?

Thanks

Nothing really special.
Do it yourself.
Remove the keys and hide them away until you done.
You don't want the SBC performing a self test with your fingers in the caliper.

This thread has great PDF instructions at the bottom.. https://mbworld.org/forums/sl-class-...-question.html

I am getting ready to do the same thing - are you going to use OEM pads or aftermarket ? Everyone says Akebonos cut the dust problem - but I am more concerned about performance. I have had the OEM pads overheat and fade on me and would like to hear if anyone has any suggestions on a high-performace pad for the SL600.

Unless you're using your car on the track, there are no problems with the Akebonos brakes. They not only cut brake dust by 80%, there is no apparent fade in performance and they don't squeal.

There have been numerous threads concerning the performance and I for one haven't got any complaints and they've been on for over 3000 miles on an 06 SL500.

Oh and buy the way, I do drive my cars very hard....
Take the plung, you'll be glad you stepped up to the Akebonos...

i had the same thing happen to me so i did some research on this forum and found good things about the porterfield brakes. they have a much higher heat tolerance and 90% less dust. i haven't installed mine yet but there worth looking into
