SL/R230: Replacing air filter?
You will need the correct Torx bit size, and be careful when pulling the front engine cover as there are 2 clips towards the center at the back that require a little patience to remove. Other than that, everything was 100% like every other Benz I have changed.
My car had the original factory filters still in place (very DIRTY). After removing the filters, I vacuumed out the filter housings to get all the sand, dirt, leaves etc. out and then installed new OEM replacement Mann filters.
My car runs noticably better with fresh filters, if you are mechanically inclined go for it.

Are there any clips on the back engine cover or any hidden screws anywere? Does it have flat sheet filters in the box or cones?

I can not recall the look of the engine cover of a SL500 since I have a SL600. I think they are diff since one is 8cyl and the other is 12cyl
In any case, it should be as easy as removing the cover and unscrew the airbox cover. Just have to be slow and careful.
Cabin air filter:
Should be the same in the SL600 as in the SL500. Search this forum for "cabin air filter" should give you the doc you need.
Good Luck
