No audio from COMAND

After sitting idle for about 5 days, I started up the '05 SL500 and noticed that the instrument cluster had a familiar warning: Convenience features not available (or something to that effect). After a short drive, they were enabled (e.g., seat heater) but I've been unable to get any audio from the radio, cd's, nav, telephone, etc. The nav and CD's work fine otherwise as, for example, I can see that the CD's are playing given the passage of elapsed time for a particular track. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

I believe that the car shuts off the audio amplifiers when the trunk battery is weak. Have you started and turned off the car a few times? Do you still get the warning? I think it should fix itself once the battery is charged.

Yes, I've driven it about 3 times now with each drive about 30 minutes in duration. I don't get the warning anymore which leads me to believe you're right about the battery being weak. However, no audio as of yet. Perhaps it needs a little bit more driving time (or recharging)?
Thanks.

Take the car for a long ride if possible. Otherwise add a trickle charger to the main battery and let it charge up the battery. Then retest to see if the issue still exists.

MKIRINCIC: Sorry for the, potentially, stupid question but will recharging the main battery also recharge the trunk battery?

The trunk battery is the main battery also known as the consumer battery. The battery in the trunk runs all the electronics in your car. The battery under the hood has one sole function and that is to start the car.

No. Recharging the engine compartment battery using external charger will not charge the trunk (consumer) battery. You need to charge the trunk battery separately.

I had the same issue after my car sat for about 5 weeks. After driving it several times the radio started to play and shortly thereafter the CD played (my battery was replaced last summer). It sounds as though your battery needs to be replaced. The seat heaters will work when you get the convenience message after driving a short distance even on a battery that needs replacing but other functions will take awhile longer on a soon to die battery.

Newbie here

Hello all. I am have my 2003 SL500 for about four years now. Love my car.
I am having the same exact problems with my audio. Started with comfort options not avail. Now its the audio issue.I have replaced the rear battery and was very disappointed when my audio went out again. Should I also change the front battery? will this help? I also took some advice and ordered a ctek charger. any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

You are correct, and actually, though I dislike having to replace two batteries on a vehicle, I am thrilled that MB designed the system such that you are able to utilize your actual physical key to open the vehicle to start it from the primary battery, which, in turn, while driving, will recharge the "consumer battery"; as I have, twice, absent-mindedly, left my lights on with the fogs (glad they figured that one out on the r231s) overnight, only to find that it doesn't recognize my key fob or allow me access within my vehicle in the normal approach or manner. I realize other's will have their opinions, however, my rule of thumb is 3 years unless you want to be stranded at the worst time, worst place...hence, I just replace batteries every 3 years...
