Hard Top down with KEY
I noticed today when I tried to put the hardtop down with the key (depressing the unlock button) it is not working for some reason.
Anyone have any ideas?

this uses the infrared portion of the key right? where you have to aim it at the door. i sometimes have a problem with raising/lowering windows and opening/closing sunroof with the key. i can't figure out what the problem is. some have told me it's the battery in the remote but i checked them.

Could be the key battery or the accessories battery is low. Did you get in the car and put the top down? Im pretty sure it's the secondary battery that runs the top and if it's low, a message would have said convenience features temporarily unavailable.

I tried
I tried both keys I have for the car, changed the batteries in both of them. The top operates normally when using the switch in the car to raise and lower the top, the convenience battery seems fine, everything is working and no messages.
The only problem is raising and lowering the top via the key from outside the car.

You have to hold the key very close (about 1 foot) to the door handle and press the unlock button continuously while the roof opens. Same when closing it exceptthat you push the lock button. Note that the seat ventilation fans turns on when you lower the top this way.

I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but you may just want to install the SmartTop module and be done with it. I just installed mine, and it's the single best thing I've done to the car so far. Now I can open/close the top with the key, using the RF signal rather than the IR signal. Sooooooooo much smarter. This is how MB should've engineered the system in the first place.
You also get the benefit of one-touch open and closing of the top from within the car, amongst other things.

Yesterday
Yesterday I went out to the garage and tried to put the hardtop down with the key. The trunk lid opened, flaps came out and it stopped. I opened the door, the seat vents were running. I started the car and used the interior switch to close the top.
One thing I remember is that when I had the problem when the cable to the drivers side flap busted and the service reps were giving me advice over the phone, they mentioned something about a pump or something in the left side of the trunk to the left of the spare tire and that if I had a certain tool I could loosen it and the pressure would be relieved and the top would come back down.
I wonder if the dealer I had to take the care too never tightened this back up, my thoughts are maybe it is not getting enough pressure to operate via the key.
Does this make any sense?????
