I would like to change mine also, anybody know how the covers of the center top interior lights come off to permit access to the bulbs?

finally figured it out. The complete unit comes down, just gently pry it out, there are about 3 clips, one on each side if I remeber correctly. Not hard to do, just go easy.

yes, that is correct. The individual covers do not come off, the whole unit comes down. You know they design it like that so most people give up and take it to the dealership to change a blown bulb. Just remember - Easy does it, the connecting wires are short. I played with it for the longest until I figured it out spending most of the time trying to get the individual covers to come off, by the time I got it down I was running late for an appointment so I just put it back. If you guys figure out the bulb type so that I can order the error free LED versions let me know, it will save me some time.

Anyone know the bulb type in the dome? So I can order them and only have to take it down 1x.

I use two companies for LED bulbs.

http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-b...Fled_prods.htm

http://www.xenithxenons.com/category_s/59.htm

Also you have to make sure you have resisters built in the bulbs for like you license plate bulbs.

Embedded load resistor prevents damage from power surges.

^I was under the impression you only needed load resistors to prevent throwing a code/dash board light with the exterior LED conversions. Do you need these to prevent a dash light or early failure on the interior LEDs?

I just ordered some LED items from iJDMtoy.com and will let you know how it goes. Code - GOJDM offers 10% off there for all's benefit.

Pry it down from the front with a flat head screw driver. The clips are up front Then you get to monkey around with the led bulbs and getting the connection right. Doors and under the dash are 38mm festoon which. I also used 1w led for the map light. The map lights we tricky seeing you have to modify the metal shield to get it back in.

LED rock for the interior lights.

^Did you need to use resistors or were the standard LEDs acceptable? How was the lifespan?

I use the products from Xenith Xenons for my 2006 SL600.

http://www.xenithxenons.com/category_s/59.htm

The dome lights I used 194 5-5050 SMD Bulb

The map light i use 194 1 Watt LED Bulb

i used these in the doors but i had to bend the connects to make the short bulb work so I recommend using 36 mm Festoon bulb.
31mm Festoon 6-5050 SMD Bul

They had the best price. But i ordered from ijdtoy the under the dash or over your feet bulb.

http://store.ijdmtoy.com/SMD-Map-Dom..._d36_sku22.htm

No clue on the life span only put them in last night.

I do have to say i really like the way LED light the car interior at night.

Awesome! Thanks for your helpful post.

Any pics of the interior lighting with the LEDs now that it is done? I've never seen an SL done LED (and want to make sure it isn't too bright or strange shade/looking prior to taking the leap).

Thanks again.

I have installed 2 different types of LED festoon bulbs under the diver and passenger side dash over your legs. They do not work quite well they take 2 seconds to come on and and they blink 2x after they the door closes and the light goes out.

Has anyone had any luck with LED in these area's?

Trimix, thanks for your post. I have also replaced my lights now...
can you tell me where in front to pry? The center of the dome, center left, etc?

As for the LEDs under the driver and passenger... mine do not blink... Try ordering the 36mm led festoons from Ebay, much cheaper... and they do not blink!

My courtesy lights are white, whereas my map and dash lights are blue... amazing stuff when driving at night haha!

gearshifter, can you go over the total of the lights and sizes you ordered from eBay to do the total LED interest swap? It would be much appreciated!

<li id="jsArticleStep1">
<li id="jsArticleStep1">you can follow some simple steps to remove the coutesy light. for more details check out ehow.com.
<li id="jsArticleStep1">Shift the Town Car's transmission into park and shut down the engine. Set the parking brake.
<li id="jsArticleStep2"> Insert a small flat-head screwdriver between the translucent plastic courtesy light cover and the courtesy light housing. Gently pop off the plastic cover to expose the courtesy light.
<li id="jsArticleStep3"> Remove the courtesy light bulb by hand. It pulls directly out of its receptacle; no twisting or rotating is required.
<li id="jsArticleStep4"> Install the new courtesy bulb into the receptacle and replace the plastic cover. Turn on the courtesy lamp and verify that the bulb illuminates properly.

Gearshifter,

The light assembly comes down as one unit. Pry from the left between the plastic and head liner. The bulbs are changes from the back into the light assembly. Do not try to pry the lenses off you will break them. The whole unit both side pops out as one. It also takes some fiddling around to get the Led to work so make sure it is function before you reinstall.

The problem i was having with the lights under your legs is that they dim down. The Led did not like the dimming which made them blink when going off. Did your Led dim?

Has anyone had any luck with footwell LEDS??!

Trimix,
Like you I have tried to install LEDS in the footwell locations and can't get two different sets of LEDS to work. I got one side to light up steady then as soon as I connect the other side, they both go out and I have to remove them, close the doors and try again. They flash on and off for two seconds and won't stay lit. I noticed that the passenger footwell light dims down and doesn't go completely off, this might be the issue since it has constant voltage. I have LEDS in the door courtesy lights, mirrors and dome but the footwells in my SL55 are pissing me off. I don't want to keep spending money on leds that aren't going to work. Anyone have any suggestions or a direct link to LEDS that actually work underdash?

Mercedes0604,

I had to switch back to regular bulbs in the footwells also. I also have changed all the other area as well as the back license plates to LED. I also see people having issues on the front running lights switching to LED. Anyone able to make them work?

If anyone has changed the foots wells and was able not to have them flicker please post link.

So it sounds like there is an issue with the dimming function with the footwell lights that causes all the issues. I'm sure someone out there has figured this out with a specific led bulb brand...

I not sure you can dimmer an LED. I think either it on or off.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Well when I installed the LED in the footwells, they worked at first, then after a while flickered then just turned off.

However, I can just use 1 led and the other side a blue glassed halogen bulb which enables the led to work, but you would only have 1 led on.

What I have read is that we need a capacitor to stop the flickering.
If anyone has light error codes, then they need to install a resistor.

just wondering if prying would break the plastic from the front?
I tried with a lot of strength but to no avail and was at the point where i thought it could break

I tried a few different brands to try to get them to work, and they work just fine for me if the car is running, but I have noticed one will flash every now and again, my car also still sees errors on them if I don't drive the car for a couple of days.
