When you were tearing into that, did you see if there is any way to replace the pieces of aluminum that the license plates bolt to? I need to replace or rethread one and I would much rather replace it than mess with rethreading if it is easy to pull out

i did take off the carpet liner. i just dont know what my next step is to do. the damn light w bracket itself is all loose inside and i dont kno how to take it out.

Just ordered the 2009 SL65 Black Series version (I think it's smoked from my research).
Got it from mymercedesparts.com and with shipping (and other small parts as well), it was cheaper than parts.com
Current price is $136.95 + shipping (I paid about $12 in shipping)

I just performed this procedure tonight. 35 mins. start to finish following this DIY. Stealer quoted 1 1/2 hrs at a cost of $250 tax included here in Burlington, Ont. I took your warning and was ever so careful with the clips only to find out after removing carpet that some butcher had been there prior to me as some clips were missing and that ones that were still there had damage to them. Great DIY, much appreciated.

Thanks Vendetta - just did this install. My '03 sl500 high mount light lens was cracked and chipped but still worked. Got new OEM light in red from parts.com #2308200056. $106 Install took about 30 min. Painless. http://www.parts.com/parts/2003/MERC...agramCallOut=1. No adhesive gasket on red light. Power plug has tiny release button - doesn't just pull straight off old light
