Just thought i should post. Today i had my secondary cats replaced by straight pipe, and the mid mufflers (resonators) removed and replaced with straight pipe. The car sounds MEAN.. It was definately worth it.. I don't really notice any performance gains or losses, but the sound is awesome. VERY deep when i give it gas, but it quiets down on the interstate and around town. Also, i noticed when the top is down it is much louder, so our cars are really insulated well because when the top is up, the tone is much less prominent..
Glad i decided to do it!!!

yeah, I noticed how well they are insulated as well, I didn't really hear much of a change until i put the top down

Just wondering... when you only removed the muffler, is it VERY loud? As in cops would give you a look kind of loud?

No.. It is more DEEP than loud.... I have a guy in my neighborhood with a new AUDI RS8 that sounds awesome stock.. Whenever he sees my car parked out front, he stomps the gas going by my house . My car now sounds very similar to his in my opinion. I really like the new sound, louder but not overly loud, and much much deeper.. I don't think the fuzz will mind the new sound either....

I read earlier where someone posted that this is the way the car should've sounded from AMG > I agree completely...
However, i guess the majority of 65-70 year old couples i have run into with SL55's wouldn't like the louder deep tone so because it is a Mercedes, more resonators were added...

hey guys
I have a SL500. i just want a deep and loud sound (like the AMG 55/63 exhaust)

i have been wanting to remove my reasonator.. but someone told me it may cause a warning light ? is there a airflow sensor near the reasonator ?

and the idea of removing the mufler is insane! may i ask what did you replace the mufler with? just a straight pipe ? im tempted!!!

Hi, I have removed my resonator for 4 years now, never any issue. I replaced my muffler with Remus mufflers, and I love them.

I am kinda glad this got brought up. 2 days after i had my secondary cats and resonators pulled i got a check engine lamp.. I began to worry i made a mistake by removing the secondary cats.
I must mention that my car is essentially stock except for a PTE thermostat i installed a couple of months ago to battle upcoming summer heat...

So anyway, I noticed in the morning, it takes much longer for the car to heat up than normal, and the car actually runs alot cooler.
I hooked my scanner up to the car and found i had a p0128 code which gets set of when the computer thinks the thermostat is stuck open because the engine takes longer to heat up.

My theory is that because the exhaust is SO much more free flowing, alot of the engine heat that was previously being trapped is now able to escape freely.

Read some info here
https://mbworld.org/forums/c32-amg-c...le-issues.html

Anyway, i cleared the engine code and it hasn't come back yet. I am not too concerned about the car heating up a bit slower as i let my cars warm up fully before i accellerate quickly or use WOT..

I don't know if cars with a stock thermostat will be affected, but with the PTE thermostat i have installed, i definately noticed a difference in engine temps when i freed up the exhaust flow recently..

His mama. Traded y0 mama in because she was squeaking.
The secondary cats will have "O2 Sensors" after them, hence your CEL after removing them. They sensors aren't really O2 sensors, all they do is check the exhaust pressure to ensure the secondary cats are working per spec. But they are commonly referred to as "O2 Sensors".

Get a tune that turns off the "rear o2" sensors. No more CEL... which will come back otherwise... guaranteed.

There are no sensors in the exhaust after the secondary cats. There are O2 sensors before the main cats and directly after. I have looked and looked and I am positive there are no sensors after the secondary cats.
The engine code i got was from the motor not heating up as quickly as the ecu had expected. Therefore, it thought my thermostat was stuck open and pulled a code. I have a PTE modified thermostat so the car runs much cooler than stock anyway...
I have spoken to alot of people, and have been told that now since i have removed the secondary cats, alot more heat is now released through the exhaust. Whereas before engine exhaust was 1st going through the cats and heating them, then heating the mesh in the secondary cats, and then working its way through the resonators, and then finally after all that restriction, going through the mufflers. I have been told that i have now made my motor, which is essentially an air pump, more efficient at what it does...
Basically since i have removed the 2ndary cats, then engine takes a little longer to heat up, and runs a few degrees cooler at normal operating temp as well> Which we all know is GREAT...
Anyway, i cleared the code, and have been daily driving this car, and have yet to see another CEL....

Anyway, just wanted people to know what to possibly expect if they remove both the secondary cats and resonators, and have a PTE thermostat>Be on the lookout for a code right after you have these removed and DON"T PANIC..

How is it that you clear error codes on the car manually?

Scangauge II... I just picked one up for 149.00 shipped. It is AWESOME.. Shows all kinds of things like voltage, rpm, gph, mpg, IAT, coolant temp, timing, etc.. It also allows me to scan for codes and clear codes..
Everyone should have one..

It does show MAP (which is Manifold Absolute Pressure or BOOST)...
Also, it has a trip function so you can see the max. numbers for alot of different functions..
Go to their website. You can look at the manual, etc...

RE: SL600 Muffler Removal

I'm on the fence, my SL is pretty much done and up to my specs, but my E63 frankly sounds 100% better in the exhaust department. I don't think there is much in the way of performance gain, so this would be about improving the sound, yes?

Can either of you post a sound clip without mufflers? Second, are there any other issues or downsides, i.e. drone at cruise like V8's typically will have at around 1500RPM when one tinkers with the exhaust?

Thanks in advance.

Me at the race track, 2 weeks ago:

Iphone was upside down in this one.

Little to no drone at highway speeds. It's quite imperceptible with the wind noise, to be honest. However, at community speed cruising, 25-30 mph, there is a bit of drone. Not bad, completely tolerable. The song that this thing hits at WOT, is worth it.

its INSANE!! its such a DEEP rumble. without side by side comparison.. i think my SL500 sounds like any 63 engine

but i gotta warn you guys, its EXTREMELY loud. i mean like with the windows up.. it vibrates the car.. its at least ten times louder than stock. (but i love it)

pics and vids will be posted later tonight, thanks a lot guys!

There's another thread about this with a couple more videos here: https://mbworld.org/forums/sl-class-...r-removal.html

There's also another one here with decent pics: https://mbworld.org/forums/sl-class-...at-delete.html

There was one more thread somewhere that I saw a while back with a video of what I thought was a 600 that had its resonators removed. It was daytime in a parking lot with the camera behind the car and the driver stomped it from a standstill moving away from the camera.

Anybody have a link to that thread or video?

Isn't there going to be an issue with DMV inspections when removing the resonators and/or mufflers?
