Looking at Used SL550s, Potential Problems?

Hey guys,

I'm looking at trading in my 06 BMW M5 for a 07-08 SL550 with around 15-20kmi and under CPO. I'm sick of issues on my 50kmi BMW and haven't really heard of so many low mileage issues on Mercedes.

I've read through the forums a bit and see there seems to be some random top issues and transmission issues, the only issues that seems fairly prevalent is the ABC suspension...

Is this true? What can I expect to encounter through 100kmi? Is the ABC suspension, top, and gearbox covered under the CPO warranty? I'm not wanting to go from one maintenance hog to another you know?

I appreciate the input and help greatly! Please save my wallet if you can lol! I'm not worried about these things if my CPO covers it... but if now.. well.. not sure I'm interested in paying this much maintenance again.

That is an excellent deal because:

The cpo warranty is the best Mercedes-Benz warranty.

CPO warranty is to 100,000 and +1 year from original factory warranty of 4 year 50,000 miles. So, you could potentially have coverage out to late 2012 or 2013 (depending on when the original warranty started). The great thing about that is that all of the concerns you were voicing are covered!

Not only that, but you can purchase an extension to your CPO out to an additional 2 years & 135,000. And, its cheaper than buying a warranty for a new Mercedes-Benz for the same coverage.

If you can't tell, I work for a Mercedes-Benz dealership as the warranty guy. If you want me to check I can tell you when the vehicle's CPO expires and get you any further information you need about your coverage / extending your coverage.

I have had my 2007 SL550 for about 1 year now and my CPO runs out in Jan2012 so I am considering extending my warranty as advised by virtually everyone on this board. I have had no issues other than a rear battery replacement that was covered under the original warranty. However, after the original warranty expired a "blown" headlight washer nozzle was not covered under the CPO.

Last week took my low mileage car in when Service B light came on after 5K miles of ownership (33K total). Since Service B is for 20K miles I was told the Service A would suffice and it was cheaper ($150vs$349). During the servicing they found a driver side motor mount leak. Was told that they replace in "pairs" under CPO warranty so two mounts were replaced. Otherwise it would have been $668.00 out of my pocket.

I absolutely love driving the car as it has been the best car I have ever owned. The dilema is that I have been told by MB service people to keep it under warranty as the hydraulics are the most expensive item failure to fix. I've read where parts can run as high as $5k and I wonder what the labor would be. 2 year MB warranty CPO extension runs $4k but what happens after that???????????

If you are capable of following DIY and know a bit about cars, most of the jobs are fairly easy for anyone to do that we run into on the SL's. But if you will be bringing it to the dealer for virtually EVERY problem, then absolutely get the warranty.
