How to upgrade Navigation
Forgive me for not reviewing posts - it's going to sound crazy, but it's true - I can't sit for long periods of time because I have bilateral sciatica.
I purchased a 2006 SL500 last year. Everything is working fine except I "think" it's outdated. Is the disc in the actually in the trunk or is it uploaded to some sort of memory or hard drive? How do I figure out what version I have? Also, am I supposed to update this every year or can I just pop in the most recent edition and get it updated. Also, what's the best resource for this (Ebay or the dealer)? I heard some people get it provided as a courtesty from the dealer. I called my dealer and they politely laughed. If someone can help me out let me know.
Also, is it possible to stick in an updated COMAND System or did they make it like typical Mercedes where nothing is updatable unless you buy the whole car with it. And lastly, I don't have a phone installed, I don't think (puck or something) - is there a way I can tell and if isn't, I imagine this system is outdated and I should just use my phone. And finally - (sorry) - is there voice activation on the 2006 year? Thanks!

You can just get the latest disk (I would purchase from the dealer). You do not need to do a step by year update.
The NAV drive is in the trunk, just eject the disk and look at the label for the date and version of what is currently in there.
You can not update the COMAND itself to anything newer(and in fact has been the same from 2005 - 2010)
You can add a phone system, just look at our site for details.

Can you tell me what to search for exactly? I get a billion hits on junk. I heard there is a wireless bluetooth adapter where my phone can intergrate with the COMAND unit. Can't remember the name of the company. I don't have a puck. Also, I read that Firmware for Comand is normally done at the dealer during service, my dealer said he didn't know anything about it and wanted to charge me 100 plus dollars. I just had a Service B done too. Would like to have solid info to hit him with. Thanks. Look forwarding to hear..

Check your other post for Nav example. What MB updates is the COMAND version, not the maps. Maps is extra which is why I bought mine off ebay. My puck was also missing and I bought the bluetooth puck off ebay also and it came with instructions and how to sync. Works flawlessly.

Thank you for responding. The DVD link is 2010. I'd like to get 2011 or 2012 (if released. Europes is out already). The puck - is this difficult to install? Mercedes said for me to add bluetooth to my car would be in the neighborhood of $5,000.

I'm not aware of a v.10 DVD being available. Take a photo of your upper center console and post for me to see. If it has a u-shaped apparatus towards the front, all you should need is the puck. If nothing is there, then you may need an alternative setup.

Here is the company that supplies MB with the disks....Navteq

Enter you make/model/year and it will return the latest and greatest map disk.
I did it very quickly, and it's showing v.10 is the latest and greatest.
