when glue them back in position, use small skrews at same time, to keep them in place,on side of each clip, just think and you figure it out, and not to long skrews
I too have a 2005 SL500 and my headliner (6) clips are all detached. Is this normal? How would this happen without someone detaching them? Can I reattach them using the disassembly instructions mentioned earlier?
The car also has a disturbing rattle at 1500RPM. It seems to be coming from the rear of the car. I was told (by a non-MB shop) that the rattle was my passenger-side muffler. I don't necessarily think this is the case, but it drives me nuts.
THanks
so you have oiled up all roof and trunk seals with special MB oil for the roof seals?
I inherited my dad’s 2003 SL500 when he passed a year ago. I’ve had to change the alternator, both batteries, the PSE pump in the trunk, the soft close switch on the trunk, the third taillight and now I discovered apparently the front cylinder has a leak. I refilled my hydronic fluid in the trunk because it was below the lower triangle but it won’t open the latch - I just hear a liquid noise when I pull the open switch and then hydrolic fluid pours from either the left or right headliner, however the lock mechanism never unlocks so that the roof will open so I can access the screws to remove the liner. Is there a way to manually manipulate the roof latch locks so that I can open the roof to begin this process or a way to access those 5 screws that are angles between the liner and makeup mirrors? Help this has become a pain! I’ve searched for videos for when you have to manually manipulate it and make it open but I find nothing. Thank you all in advance - sincerely A girl who just wants to fix her dad’s car back to its glory.
Yep. Pull out the bung in the roof liner towards the front and access the hex key slot there to open the roof locks, but you might have to do the whole manual open sequence. Does the trunk open and the flaps fold back?
Here's a vid for the sequence but he's a bit rough
I just inverted my rear clips (gap up) as I had a hard time (as a solo act) getting the pins to stay engage while I re-installed/moved the liner around.
Now, with the gaps up can I pre-insert the pins and will I have enough slop/flex/motion to be able to hold the front in place with a few of the star screws and then just slide and click/lock the slots in place?
I use a couple of loose zip ties to hold the front edge, but allow plenty of movement. This gives you enough movement to get the rear pins in the holes. Get all five seated, then do the sides and the front screws.

Thanks, I was using zip ties BUT my rear pins would not stay in (and two with glue came off). So now I am trying JB Weld (so I will wait until tomorrow for cure time), screws, slot up...AND Zip ties.

After reading these posts I thought of a simpler fix, yet leaves access just in case, Velcro! Purchase Velcro, I chose Outdoor Quality, due to 140 degree glue adhesion specification; (we’ll see it’s hot in AZ). Lower roof into trunk, and use convenience button to lift roof upright. You will see the failed fastener glue, yellowish dots Wedge opening between roof and liner to hold open in place, (I used small screw drivers with rubber handles in former fastener positions). Feel the underside of headliner for the former attachment points and the hidden support arms inside headliner, I marked those with pencil, as the flat gaps in between are the targets for Velcro tape. I separated the Female and Male Velcro strips, cutting and attaching the Female to the roof in several strips 4-5 inches each across the back edge of the roof, and a 10 or so smaller 2 inch size male strips attached to the headliner in the gaps between the previous attachments and support arms. You will use more female strip material as a result. This picture shows Female installation on one side of old fastener, I put it end to end on roof.
[img alt="After applying strips on both sides, remove wedges, lift headliner up and push forward to attach Male to Female strips. It not necessary for 100% attachment, just enough to adhere the sides together.
